Roopkund, also known as Skeleton Lake or Mystery Lake, is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the Uttarakhand state of India, in the Himalayas. The lake gained its nickname “Skeleton Lake” due to the presence of hundreds of human skeletons at its bottom and surrounding areas. These skeletons were discovered in 1942 by a forest ranger, and their origin has been the subject of scientific inquiry and folklore.

The skeletons are believed to date back to the 9th century CE and are thought to be the remains of pilgrims or travelers who perished in a sudden and severe hailstorm. However, the exact circumstances surrounding their deaths remain uncertain, and various theories have been proposed over the years, including epidemics, ritual suicide, or even a military expedition. Some studies suggest that these individuals belonged to different groups, indicating that Roopkund may have been a significant travel route or pilgrimage site in ancient times.

The Roopkund trek is one of the most sought-after high-altitude trekking destinations in India. This trek takes adventurers through breathtaking landscapes, including alpine meadows, dense forests, and rugged terrain, before reaching the mysterious Roopkund Lake. Known for its challenging trails and mesmerizing views, the trek is a thrilling experience for both beginners and experienced trekkers alike. The journey to Roopkund usually starts from Lohajung or Wan village and takes several days to complete. Along the way, trekkers encounter scenic spots such as Didina, Ali Bugyal, Bedni Bugyal, and Bhagwabasa, each offering stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

For adventure seekers in northern India, the Roopkund trek from Delhi has become a popular choice, as numerous trekking groups and travel agencies organize trips from the capital city. Many travel enthusiasts from Delhi prefer this trek due to its accessibility and the breathtaking natural beauty it offers. Organizers provide guided trekking packages that include transportation, accommodations, meals, and trekking gear, ensuring a smooth experience for those venturing into the Himalayas.

One of the highlights of the Roopkund trek is the dramatic change in landscapes as trekkers ascend. The journey begins in lush green forests, gradually opening up to vast meadows and, eventually, barren, snow-covered trails leading to the lake. During the trek, one can witness diverse flora and fauna, including rare Himalayan flowers and birds. The region is also culturally rich, with local villages offering insight into the traditions and lifestyles of the mountain communities.

The best time to undertake the Roopkund trek is during the pre-monsoon months of May and June or the post-monsoon months of September and October. During these periods, the weather remains favorable, and the trails are clear, making it easier for trekkers to navigate the challenging terrain. However, due to environmental concerns and increasing footfall, the government has taken steps to regulate trekking activities in the area, ensuring the conservation of the region’s delicate ecosystem.

In recent years, Roopkund has attracted attention from both researchers and tourists alike, drawing interest in understanding its historical significance and ecological importance. Efforts have been made to preserve the site and its surrounding environment while also promoting responsible tourism in the region. Trekkers are encouraged to follow eco-friendly practices, such as avoiding plastic waste and respecting local customs.

Whether starting from Delhi or other parts of India, this trek offers an unforgettable experience, making it a bucket-list-worthy destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

4. High Altitude Awareness & Safety Protocol

I acknowledge that this trek involves high-altitude conditions, and I may experience symptoms related to altitude sickness or reduced oxygen levels. I understand that for my safety, the trek leader has full authority to assess my condition at any stage and may require me to descend to a lower altitude if continuing is considered unsafe.

I understand and agree that:

  • Routine health monitoring will be conducted at camps, including checks of oxygen saturation (SpO₂), pulse rate, and blood pressure.

  • If my vital readings fall outside the safe range for a particular altitude, the trek leader may restrict my ascent or remove me from the trek, without any entitlement to a refund.

Additional Medical Requirement for Participants Aged 58 Years and Above

If I am 58 years of age or older, I acknowledge and agree to the following safety protocol:

a. High-altitude trekking places significant stress on the cardiovascular system. With increasing age, this stress may increase the risk of serious or life-threatening complications, particularly for individuals with a history of high blood pressure or heart-related conditions.

b. A Treadmill Test (TMT) provides a clear medical assessment of cardiovascular fitness and helps determine readiness for high-altitude trekking. This test, along with proper fitness preparation, significantly improves trek safety.

c. GoAdven India encourages trekking for all age groups while prioritizing safety. This protocol has been introduced solely to reduce health risks and ensure a safe and successful trekking experience.

d. I agree to submit a valid Treadmill Test report within 7 days of trek registration.

  • If the report confirms healthy cardiovascular function, I may continue with the trek and focus on fitness preparation.

e. If the report indicates medical concerns, GoAdven India may advise me to postpone participation and improve my health before reapplying. In such cases, the trek fee will be refunded as per applicable policies.

5. Final Acknowledgement & Agreement

I confirm that I have thoroughly read, understood, and accepted all terms, conditions, and legal implications of this agreement. I voluntarily agree to be bound by all provisions contained herein.

I further acknowledge that if any clause or part of this agreement is held to be invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, such determination shall not affect the validity or enforceability of the remaining provisions, which shall continue to remain effective.

I understand and agree that GoAdven India has determined the pricing, structure, and offering of this trek based on my acceptance of these terms. I acknowledge that without my consent to this agreement, GoAdven India would not be able to provide or conduct the trekking services.
